Flavors from around the globe are just down the street from Axis apartments in DTLA.
Grand Central Market is a foodie paradise with a wealth of cuisines all crammed into a historic marketplace. If you haven’t been, you need to go. The weekend crowds can be a bit overwhelming, with lines approximating Disneyland rides for the trendiest spots, but the food is generally worth it. Alternately, when you live at Axis on Eleventh or Axis on Twelfth, you’re not that far away, pop in during the week when lines are more manageable and the food is still de-lish-ous. Make the market a regular stop and you’ll be rewarded with some of the best food in LA. As an added bonus, a good deal of it is pretty cheap, too.
Your destiny is this falafel. It’s the perfect combination of fresh, healthy and fried. Go with the Kismet falafel. The mix of crunchy fried chickpea balls, pickled cauliflower, fennel yogurt with mint and cilantro will have you dreaming about it for weeks. It’s that good.
From one must-eat to another, we have two words for you. Panang curry. Sweet and savory, with a touch of spice, this coconut and braised beef masterpiece is one of the highlights of a stellar selection of authentic Thai street food served up at Sticky Rice.
From the streets of Bangkok to the streets of Berlin, currywurst is one of the most popular on-the-go snacks in Germany, and fits in quite nicely with the ambience of the market. The menu is simple and if you like sausage snacks, welcome to your new best wurst stop.
Tacos Tumbras a Tomas
To say there are a few taquerias in LA would be like saying there are a few stars in the sky. But it’s hard to match the mix of quality, quantity and price you’ll get here. If you like a meaty taco this is your place. Carnitas and al pastor tacos are recommended.
Belcampo Meat Co.
Yes, it’s a butcher, but there’s also a small counter next to the meat case where you can grab a seat and eat. Order a burger made with organic beef from cows raised on a ranch near Mount Shasta; it just might melt your heart, in a good way. Plus, you can always grab some burgers and steaks to throw on the grills back at Axis.
Fried chicken sandwich. It’s crispy. It’s juicy. It’s scratch-made. What are you waiting for? They also have straight up buckets of fried chicken. Lucky Bird believes that fried chicken solves everything, and, frankly, with such tasty morsels, we can’t argue.
Olio GCM Wood-Fired Pizzeria
Do yourself a favor and get a pizza from Olio. It’s pizza done the old-school way; baked in a wood-burning oven and with top-notch ingredients. It’s simple food, but absolutely fantastic.
McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams
You’re going to need something sweet and creamy to top off this festival of flavors. McConnell’s is a wonderful choice. Nothing crazy, just great ice cream made with fresh ingredients. Pick you favorite and walk home with a cone and a smile.
