Take advantage of stunning spaces to host guests in apartments in DTLA
Having friends over for a shindig doesn’t have to mean a full day of shopping and preparation beforehand. Just use these ideas to have an al fresco affair to remember at Axis apartments in DTLA.
The Lo-Fi Luau
Teriyaki burgers. Pineapple hot dogs. Hawaiian-style chips. Maui onion dip. Throw in some tropical beers and head down to the Axis on Eleventh grills to get it all done. Maybe grab some leis for your guests and if you want to get “fancy”, here’s a recipe for the perfect Mai Tai:
DTLA Mai Tai
- 1 ounce Greenbar Crusoe Silver rum
- 1 ounce dark rum (from Jamaica, if possible)
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 3/4 ounce orgeat syrup (in a pinch, you can use almond syrup)
- 1/2 ounce of Dry Curacao
Mix all ingredients and pour into a glass of shaved or super finely crushed ice-NO CUBES; this is a potent mix, so you want it watered down a little. Then garnish with mint and lime.
The Perfect Potluck
Have your friends make most of the food for you! Pick a theme or cuisine, assign dish categories, e.g. veggies, starchy sides, salads, dessert, etc., and make the main course yourself. Depending on the number of guests, your lovely Axis apartment could be great, or you can take it to the indoor/outdoor resident lounge at Axis on Twelfth. Of course, the perfect cocktail for a potluck is any one you choose, but you can never go wrong with a margarita.
- 2 ounces Greenbar Ixá Silver Tequila
- 3/4 ounce fresh squeezed lime
- ½ ounce simple syrup
- ¾ ounce Cointreau
Mix all ingredients and pour into a glass of ice, shaved is good, and cubes are fine. Salt and lime garnish are optional.
The Boutique BBQ
Forget cooking anything and just get it catered. And by catered, we mean you can just go down to Horse Thief BBQ pick up a big bag of smoked meats and sides, put it on fancy plates and take it to the Axis on Twelfth rooftop. Pair with some craft beers and whiskey cocktails and you’ll have an upscale, down-home affair. Here’s a new classic cocktail to try, especially if you’re celebrating for the Kentucky Derby:
- 2 ounces Greenbar Slow Hand Six Woods Whiskey (a Los Angeles organic original)
- ½ ounce simple syrup
- 8-10 mint leaves
Muddle mint and syrup in a glass. Fill with crushed ice. Pour in the whiskey and stir. Delicious and refreshing!
